Next

Some people love words for their own sake; I'm not one of them. Shut up! I say: shut up and listen to your heartbeat, notice the cramp in your shoulder, realize you have to take a piss. Blow your nose, cough, make some coffee. Rumsfeld's resignation will have to wait.

Kurt Vonnegut

It is beyond dispute that Kurt Vonnegut has influenced me more than my dad.

These days he's getting up there in years--he's 81--and does have a nasty tendency to repeat himself, e.g. in every interview or public statement, he plugs his son Mark Vonnegut's book The Eden Express. On the other hand, I've read the book, probably five or six times, and you should too. The guy just wrote the one book, but it's as good as anything as his dad ever wrote, and probably better. It's called a memoir of schizophrenia, but that explanation really doesn't do the book justice. Read it as a novel if you like, but read it.

But back to Kurt. He has a somewhat scatter-shot, but still wide-ranging and thought-provoking, essay here.

Grand Opening

I've decided to take the grand opportunity offered by this extreme low point in my personal life to start a blog. Rome is burning and dammit, I've got some fiddling to do.

So, let us begin.

On this blog I want to talk about, I think, three things (no doubt I will add to this list later but I think these will cover the bulk of it):

1) The Bush Administration and why they truly suck.

2)Philosophical musings about life and the universe. These will range from personal and pissed off (e.g. why I haven't devoted my life to auto glass) to happily content and accepting of the order of things.

3)The third part will consist of me hitting on girls. Or asking people if they know how I could get a job in Canada.

I promise that future posts will involve more specific information, e.g. about actual Bush policies and actions to which I will object (if history is any indication) in incredibly eloquent detail. I bet you can hardly wait.
